Agenesis Of Corpus Callosum
There is no definitive treatment or cure. Symptoms are treated and supportive care is provided through the following:
- Appropriate medication for epilepsy
-
Physiotherapy for improving coordination
-
Speech and visual rehabilitation
-
Shunt for hydrocephalus, if present
-
Appropriate psychiatric therapies
-
Special education for children with intellectual disabilities
-
Surgeries, if needed, for any associated condition
-
Genetic counselling for families
PROGNOSIS
The prognosis of children with ACC is dependent on any associated conditions that might be present. A child with isolated agenesis of corpus callosum and without any significant neurological deficits has the best prognosis overall. However, a child with associated neuronal migration disorder has the worst prognosis.
Patients with neurological deficits may have a better prognosis if special education and supportive treatments are initiated early during the course.
The associated disorders can also lead to several complications. Some of the most common ones are schizophrenia, cerebral palsy and aspiration pneumonia.
