Parents Eduction for Umbilical Hernia
- Most of the umbilical hernia closes by 4-5 years of age. So it is advisable, not to intervene before that if the hernia is asymptomatic.
- Use of pressure dressing is unlikely to help in the early closure of the umbilical hernia.
- Use of pressure dressing may cause irritation of the skin around the umbilicus.
- If your child complains about pain at the site of the umbilicus or any symptoms like abdominal distension or vomiting, immediately report to the pediatric surgeon.
- Surgery is the only option when the hernia does not regress on its own.
- Umbilical hernia repair is a safe surgery.
- If the umbilical hernia does not regress by 4 years of age, please get it repaired before the child goes to school.
