Pentazocine

Mechanism :

It is an opioid analgesic drug used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain and also as a pre-anesthetic agent. Long term use may cause physical and psychological dependency.


Indication :

  • Relief for moderate to severe pain
  • Pre-operative sedation
  • Supplement to surgical anaesthesia

Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity to pentazocine or any component.


Dosing :

>1 year:
0.5 mg/kg IM.

Adverse Effect :

Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sedation, psychic disturbances. Rapid injection may cause respiratory and cardiac depression.


Interaction :

Morphine: May potentiate or reduce analgesic effect of opiate agonist (i.e. morphine) depending on patients’ tolerance to opiates.
CNS depressants: Additive effects seen with other CNS depressants.



Hepatic Dose :

Usage with caution is recommended, dose may need to be reduced due to decreased hepatic metabolism and increased risk of adverse effects. However, guidelines do not specify dose.
