This study was carried out by Division of Field Studies at the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, India to determine whether distribution of dietary energy within a family is equal or not. This study was carried out in 5,458 households from seven states in India and energy consumption of preschool children, schoolchildren, and adolescents was compared with that of adult men and women in the same households by 24-hour dietary recall in 1996-97. This dietary distribution of energy was compared with the data collected in 1975-80 in the same villages.

Results: It was found that about one-third of the preschool children had an inadequate intake of energy, even when their adult counterparts had an adequate intake, whereas in 7% both preschoolers and their parents were consuming inadequate amounts of energy. The extent of energy inadequacy was much less in adolescents and school-age children than in preschool children. In 1996-97, there was a significant increase in the proportion of households with preschool children consuming inadequate energy.

The authors thus conclude that parents need to be educated regarding proper nutritional needs of the children.
