Question
My thirteen-year-old daughter has had an ultrasound showing a nodule on herthyroid. How common is this in children? What questions should I ask the endocrinologist (pediatric) when I see him this week? Who should perform a fine needle biopsy if this is recommended? What determines if a nodule should be removed? Thank you so much for your help.
Answer
Why was the ultrasound done in the first place? What are her thyroid function tests (blood tests)? The nodule needs to correlate with this parameter and then further line of action can be decided.
A thyroid scan may be advised by the endocrinologist to check if the nodule is actively functioning before further investigations may be advised.
