Question
Can a child diagnosed with thalassemia minor be given oral iron therapy? (Prophylactic in a dose of 1-2mg/kg/day of elemental iron - to prevent anemia aggravation b/o concomitant iron deficiency) or should he be given folate only?
Answer
Patients with thalessemia minor can develop iron deficiency anemia. There is no role for prophylactic iron supplement in such cases and iron therapy is required only if there is evidence of iron deficiency.
