Question
My son just turned five in October. He has had a dental checkup. He now is complaining of pain on the gum behind his last tooth on the left side of his mouth. Could he be getting a tooth there? He did get all his other teeth pretty early but he hasn't lost any yet. I appreciate your help. Thank you.
Answer
The primary teeth usually finish erupting by 2 1/2 years of age. The permanent teeth start erupting at around 6 years of age. Sometimes they may come early and the first to come would be the first molar. The pain could be related to eruption of the first molar or it could be an infection. Show him to dentist to rule out the infection, dental caries.
