Question
My 7 month old grandson is in the hospital receiving meds to try to control seizures and convulsions. they worked to a point but he is still having problems. They have done spinal tap which came out ok, EEG's which show his brain is still firing off these signals, they have done MRI's and there is no swelling of the brain. He had turned blue while in day care and at the nearest emergency room had to be bagged and they gave him fluids intravenously and tylonol for a temp, them shipped him to Duluth where he is now. My question is what happens if these seizures can't be helped by meds, what comes next? Some where in the phone calls I am picking up thoughts that this little guy could die because of this. Is that a distinct possibility? I haven't had any experience in this and know very little about this type of situation. Thank you.
Answer
Seizures in children are due to a variety of causes such as Febrile seizures (seizures due to fever), meningitis & encephalitis, (seizures due to infections of the brain), metabolic problems (such as low blood sugar, low blood calcium, magnesium etc), structural malformations of the brain, epilepsy or due to some inherited metabolic problem that cause deficiency of a particular enzyme in the body. The seizures are usually controlled with medications. Seizures that do not respond to routine medications are treated by putting the child on a ventilator and giving general anesthesia. Unresponsive seizures are usually seen in patients with enzyme deficiency due to inherited metabolic problems or due to severe infections of the brain. Since, he has fever, infections of the brain should be ruled out and medicine should be given accordingly, as prolonged seizures can cause a lot of brain damage and serious consequences too.
