Question
Dear Doctor, I've a 22-mths old toddler. She has a habit of picking her nose. My problem is that her nose will bleed whenever she does it. I'm worried that this may cause problem to her health in future. I'd be very much appreciated if you could give me some advice regarding nose bleeding for young children. Thanks in advance.
Answer
Nose picking is one of the commonest causes of bleeding from the nostril. The blood vessels in the nose are very fragile and slightest trauma or increase in the blood pressure can lead to bleeding from the nostril. Since nose picking is a habit difficult to lose, it requires a lot of patience and parental firmness. Teach your child that picking the nose can lead to bleeding, infections and entry of germs into the body. Once the bleeding occurs, the bleeding site forms a scab that the child would repeatedly pick on causing more bleeding. Appyling a little vaseline on the area would help.
