Question
I am trying to find all information as to what spoon nails are in toddlers and what can be done for them?
Answer
Spoon nails are a particular shape of the nails seen in patients who have deficiency of iron. Due to chronic deficiency of iron, the hemoglobin goes down and the child becomes anemic and pale. There is spooning of the nails (also called koilonychia). This is treated by treating the cause i.e. correcting the iron deficiency. The patient is given iron in the form of tablets/syrups or in rare cases by injections. The therapy may be continued for 3-6 months till the total body iron deficiency is corrected. Hope this answers your query.
