Question
Question: My granddaughter is being breastfed by a smoker of 1 pack a day. She even smoked during pregnancy. My granddaughter is about 18 months & I have asked my daughter-in-law to quit breastfeeding after I read many reports and research studies by physicians that smokers who breast feed are passing on nicotine and breastfed babies by smokers have a high amount of nicotine in their urine. The articles claim that breast feeding by a smoker is more dangerous than the side effects of second hand smoke. Why isn't this covered in your articles?
Answer
Smoking is not recommended during pregnancy or during breast feeding. Your granddaughter is now old enough to eat the regular adult diet and should be weaned off from the breast feed. Regarding covering this topic on www.pediatriconcall.com, we are trying to cover most of the topics related to child health and are regularly putting up new articles. As soon as we have an article on Smoking in Pregnancy we shall let you know.
