Question
I am a concerned neighbor. My neighbor has two sons. She has a one year old and a two year old. Both of them have seizures when they have fevers. I believe the condition is called "Febrile seizures." Well, they don't have any medical insurance and the doctor they do see only prescribes: ammoxicillan and albuterol for the two. Both have fevers that are going on three days. Is there any chance that the children might have meningitis or do you have any other suggestions on what these parents should be looking for other than a simple fever and ear infection?
Answer
If the children have been having frequent seizure with fever, it is most likely febrile seizures. In meningitis, the child would be toxic, lethargic with poor appetite and not playful. He may have associated symptoms such as vomiting, headache, intolerance to bright light etc. For febrile seizures one has to ensure that patients do not get high temperature. As soon as the patient's get fever, they should be sponged with cold water and given paracetamol to ensure that fever does not rise and seizures do not occur.
