Question
My daughter was diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux, Grade I, at 7 weeks of age. We just went back for our second round of testing, six months later. The tests performed were VCUG, sonogram, and MAG 3. The first time she was diagnosed and all we had was a VCUG and sonogram, so the MAG 3 was a big surprise. I won't know the specialists official diagnosis for two weeks as she was involved in a major car accident and is still recovering. The doctor who performed the VCUG did tell me that the reflux is gone from her right ureter, however it has been upgraded to a Grade II on the left side, with inflammation of the kidney, however did not specify which kidney she was talking about. I tried to ask for clarification, but (my personal opinion is she had no clue what I was asking.) I had been left under the impression that as long as she took her medicine every night and there have not been any outbreak UTI's, that she should stay the same. Is it wrong of me to think that the next time we go in six months that she will be upgraded to a Grade III or even IV? This stress is very hard on me. I am married, however I have a Neanderthal of a husband who believes the family is my sole responsibility. Just as a side note, I am diagnosed as bi-polar type II and do not handle stress very well. I've spent the past two days crying my eyes out, worried and with no answers. Any information I could receive would be very helpful. Thank you for your time.
Answer
A grade 1 to grade 2 is not much of a difference on VCUG as interpretation varies on expertise. If she has had no breakthrough UTIs and no further scarring of the kidneys on renal scan and she is growing well with renal functions in the normal limits and VUR on one side having disappeared, one can safely wait and see if the VUR disappears on the other side.
