Question
My sister is 8.5 months pregnant and went in for an ultrasound because she is measuring 3 weeks farther along than her due date. During the ultrasound they discovered a cist on his kidney how often does that occur? What is the likely hood of that being cancerous? Should we worry and how can I find out more information?
Answer
If you mean cyst in the fetal kidney i.e. the baby's kidney, it could mean a polycystic kidney disease. This is a condition where small cysts form on the kidney (they are not cancerous) which can lead to hypertension in an individual. PKD cysts can slowly replace much of the mass of the kidneys, reducing kidney function. Though the treatment is essentially after the child is born, there are some centers that try to treat it within the womb. You may need to consult a pediatric nephrologist and a pediatric surgeon for the same. Your gynaecologist will be the best guide to direct you to the proper consultants.
