Question
MY SON WAS BORN WITH DUAINES SYNDROME AND HAS HAD REGULAR CHECKS ON HIS VISION.BUT AS HE IS NOW SEVEN. HE SEEMS TO BE MORE AFFECTED PSYCHOLOGICALLY. TODAY HE TOLD ME HE TRIED TO PUSH HIS EYES IN THE DIRECTION THAT IT DOES NOT MOVE(RIGHT EYE DON'T MOVE TO THE RIGHT).THIS IS HEART BREAKING TO SEE, EVEN THOUGH I TRY TO EXPLAIN THE SITUATION TO HIM I UNDERSTAND HOW HE MUST FEEL.THIS IS WHY I'M TRYING TO FIND OUT IF THERE IS ANY POSSIBILITY OF CORRECTIVE SURGERY EITHER IN THE UK OR ELSE WHERE?IF SO, IS THERE RISKS? WHOM DO I CONTACT?
Answer
The inability of the eyes to move in one or more directions will not be rectified by the surgery. In some cases surgery is done as the eyes do not work together and there is a noticeable squint. In Duane’s syndrome a head posture is adopted mainly to allow the two eyes to work together. In many cases this head posture is only small so no surgery would be done. The results of surgery are not as consistent or as permanent as with other forms of squints therefore surgery is avoided where possible.
