Question
My son is 9 years old, just happen to catch him coming out of the shower and noticed that his penis is almost non-existent. I am an NNP and am familiar with micropenis in newborns and do not recall being worried about that particular diagnosis when he was a newborn. He of course refuses to go the pediatrician for this and I am wondering if I am overreacting. In addition his scrotum appears to be normal size. Thank you,
Answer
The penis in prepubertal boys may appear as small. What is more important to know is whether the stretched penile length (SPL) is normal as per his age. Sometimes the SPL may be normal but the penis may appear small - in that case there is nothing to worry about. You can consult your doctor regarding the same and also to measure the Stretched penile length accurately so that further evaluation if required can be done.
