Question
My wife is 7 weeks pregnant. Her blood test shows Rubella IgG 216 IU/ml on 30 april 2004 and IgM OD/CO is 0.690/0.387 on 10 may 2004. Please assist to let us know if this indicates any danger. Thanks.
Answer
Results of rubella IgM assays conducted on serum samples from pregnant women should always be interpreted with caution. Any history of rash or contact with rash, previous rubella testing, and history of vaccination should be taken into consideration. Also the IgG and IgM tests have been done 10 days apart thus making it difficult to detect if it is a past infection or a recent infection. It would be worthwhile to do a repeat IgG after 4 weeks of the 1st test and if it increases, one may do amniocentesis and do amniotic fluid rubella PCR to detect if the baby is infected.
