Question
I have a 3 week old daughter. Initially after birth she had 'physiological' jaundice. After some days a count of billirubin was taken and it had come down, but it is still not in the normal range. Could it be possible that the liver is still immature and needs to be given more time to normalize? My daughter is established on breast feeding. Could you please let us know what warning signs to look for if there is a need to be concerned? She is a full term baby.
Answer
Jaundice persisting in a newborn more than 15 days requires evaluation for the cause before labeling it as exaggerated physiological jaundice. Conditions such as hypothyroidism, breast milk jaundice, hemolysis etc should be ruled out. Consult your neonatologist for the same.
