Question
I have a three week old infant and her blood pressure in her left arm is 100/48 and in her left leg 100/54. What is a normal blood pressure for an infant and if it is high what course of action should I take?
Answer
There are charts available for normal BP in infants and children and they vary according to age, sex, height and weight of a child. Anyway, a systolic BP of >100 mm of HG is definitely high for a neonate. The baby would require further BP recordings at different times and if persistently high, then she would require investigation for the high BP.
