Question
When my son was born it was a very traunatic birth- they had to use a vacuum to get him out-he had the cord wrapped around his neck and he wasn't breathing. He's 9 years old now with hearing and speaking difficulties-behavioral difficulties as well. He didn't even start speaking until he was 3 and everyone still has a hard time understanding him-and he has had ear testing over and over again-they say there's nothing wrong . Do you think that he should undergo neurological testing? And could some of these problems be caused by his birth? Oh yeah they also had to revive him after too and his apgars were really low too. Any suggestions ?
Answer
He seems to have suffered hypoxic damage at birth due to the cord around his neck. An MRI of the brain would be useful to prove that. This decreased oxygen supply to the brain at the time of birth may have led to hearing and speech problems. The treatment for which is only speech therapy.
