Question
THANK YOUR FOR RESPONDING TO MY EMAIL. I'M GLAD TO SAY HER PLATELET COUNT HAS GONE UP TREMENDOUSLY. HER HGC AND RBC HAVE GONE DOWN ALONG WITH HER WBC. I HAVEN'T BEEN GIVEN A DEFINITE DIAGNOSIS BUT APLASTIC ANEMIA IS A POSSIBiLITY. IS A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT ALWAYS NECESSARY FOR THIS CONDITION? ARE THERE MEDICATIONS THAT CAN BE USED BEFORE A TRANSPLANT?
Answer
The treatment of choice for young patients with aplastic anemia(<20 years old) with an HLA-compatible donor is bone-marrow transplantation (BMT). The second line of treatment for patients is immunosuppressive therapy with antithymocyte or antilymphocyte globulin and/or cyclosporine.
