Question
My 12 year old son seems to have small soft lumps in his scrotum. His testes seem fine although one, the left seems larger than the other one. I can't seem to find any information about this condition. I am hoping it is part of his development and hormonal. However, my son is quite concerned. He has himself convinced that it is testicular cancer, but there seems to be no lumps on the testes. Please set our minds at rest.
Answer
It is normal for one testis to be larger as compared to the other. Regarding the lumps, do they increase or decrease in size in different postures or are they the same? If they change with posture, condition such as hernia or hydrocele should be ruled out. If the lumps are the same, then if they are painless, not growing in size, they are benign and suggest some sort of an infection or growth. If the lumps are painful and growing in size, consult your doctor right away to rule out a tumor. If there is history of sexual exposure, he needs to be checked for sexually transmitted diseases such as venreal warts, chylamdia etc.
