Question
My 13 month old has been in the 90-95th percentile for weight ever since he was born and 75-90 for height - he is a big boy! His Dr. recommended that he be on 2% milk instead of whole milk (he drinks a lot of milk). I know that fat is important at this age and I trust my Dr. - I was just wondering what your thoughts were.
Answer
Your son is definitely on the borderline high normal for his weight. Till he does not cross his percentiles and remains in the same range, you need not be worried. Diet restriction in form of low fat milk may not be required till he remains in his percentiles. His body profile is basically on the stouter side as his height is also very good. Since his requirements are higher, his intake also would be higher as compared to other kids. However, a balance would be required to prevent overeating and then being overweight.
