Question
Why does my 4 1/2 yr old daughter gets hiccups after about half an hour, after her meals, and especially so if she moves around after the meal? This is seen more commonly after her dinner.
Answer
Hiccups are caused to irritation of the phrenic nerve. (It is the nerve that causes the movement of the diaphragm). When a patient eats too much the pressure on the diaphragm increases and as a result leads to irritation on the diaphragm. Thus, decreasing the pressure on the diaphragm helps. As a result we have this age old saying of drinking seven sips of water when we have hiccups so as to allow the food to pass into the intestines and relieve the pressure on the diaphragm. You can try by making sure that she does not overeat.
