Question
Hi My 11 year old son was recently diagnosed to have hernia. Last year he had his appendix removed. Can you please tell us more about hernia and the cure to it. Are there any long term effects when he grows up? Many thanks Regards
Answer
A hernia is a lump or bulge in the scrotum(boys) or groin(boys or girls) which contains bowel or other abdominal structure which has slipped through a persistent sac from the abdominal cavity. These hernias do not go away on their own. Very young children need an operation as soon as a hernia appears because if the bowel gets caught in the hernia, it can be damaged. Most hernia surgery in children is performed as outpatient surgery so the child does not need to stay overnight. Long term prognosis is good.
