Question
My son has NEPHROTIC SYNDROME and now in remission by taking Prednisolone 20mg alternate day and Cyclosporin 7mg per day. Can I plan my vacation to go India. Is there any chance for him to get infection or relapse when mosquito bit in our area there?
Answer
Mosquito bites usually cause malaria, dengue and filariasis. Though he is in remission, however he is on immunosuppressive agents such as steroids and cyclosporin hence adequate care should be taken to prevent infection. It would be worthwile keeping him on oral antibiotics such as pentids, malaria prophylaxis by giving weekly chloroquine while he is here. Also take care not to eat outside water and food to prevent hepatitis. At the moment he cannot be vaccinated as he is on immunosuppression. Consult your pediatrician for the various prophylactic measures.
