Question
I'm anxious to know what to do as a bracket of my kid's braces has been detached from the teeth. Why does this happen? What will be the consequences? I cannot contact his orthodontist now as his clinic is closed on public holidays. What can I do to prevent the condition getting worse? What if it falls off and he may swallow it or will he get hurt by the wires? I hope to get your advice as soon as possible. Thanks very much for your attention.
Answer
If a bracket becomes loose, most of the times it remains connected to the main wire by the small rubber band attached to it. It can be left in place till you see your orthodontist. A small forceps may be used to reposition it if it flips around the wire. If the piece falls off, save the piece for future handling by the orthodontist. You can even consult your dentist if the situation worsens.
