Question
8 week old, otherwise healthy girl..grand daughter... has a slight blue tinge to her eyeball whites. Heard somewhere this might be symptomatic of a problem?? Comments please. Is weekend here and next Dr. visit is 2 weeks away....also don't want to unnecessarily alarm my daughter.
Answer
Blue sclera in newborns is quite common and is due to thin sclera (the white part of the eye) and the underlying retina gives the color. This usually disappears by 3-6 months of age once the sclera thickens.
