Question
My 5 yr old son has extreme constipation. He has had the problem since birth. He only goes now with the help of laxatives and even on them he holds back for days. He WILL NOT eat anything!!! Its so severe , he refuses basically anything normal people eat. I am at my wits end. No one seems to want to help us. Where can a desperate person turn?
Answer
He seems to have got into a viscous cycle of constipation leading to hard stools and pain and so further leading to holding back of stools and again causing constipation. Once in this cycle, it is very difficult to control the constipation. What one needs to do is to give him a mild laxative for a few weeks so that his stools again come back to normal consistency. If they do not work, even suppositories may be required. Once the stools are soft, he would realize that it no longer pains and would go to pass the motion as it comes rather than holding back. It is going to be very tedious involving lot of hard work and patience.
