Question
Dear sir, My grandson aged 3 yrs 2 months is suffering from Nephrotic Syndrome from last 4 months. He was on oral Prednisone of 30 mg for 6 weeks daily and later the same dosage every alternate day for 6 weeks. He was in remisson and had not taken any drug since last 4th Nov. He got cough and cold last week and now again from last week protein Is ++ in his urine. Is it serious? Should we see a Doctor immediately? Please suggest us and help. Thank you.
Answer
He seems to have proteinuria due to the infection. Treat the cough and cold and see if the proteinuria persists. If it becomes nil then there is nothing to worry about. If it continues to persist, get the 24 hours urine albumin checked as 2+ is borderline. If the albuminuria is in nephrotic range after infection settles, steroids may be indicated.
