Question
Dear Doctor, My daughter was in the range of 100 Th percentile of length(31 inches) and 50th percentile of weight(18 lbs) when she was 10th months. Now 4 months later she is still 31 inches ( fell down to around 50th percentile in height) and 23 lbs ( 75th percentile in weight). I am worried of this complete lack of height gain for the last 4 months. Mentally she is developing correctly and now can express her self very well mostly by sign and sometimes verbally. My self and my husband both are of average height so I would not be surprised if she also turns out to be of average height but this complete lack of height gain over such a long period of time is worrying me. She does not seem to have calcium deficiency because she takes 16-20 ounces of dairy products daily and recently got 4 teeth ( totalling to 15 teeth ).Also can you please suggest what tests we might need to perform to ascertain if there is some problem with her or not.
Answer
What is important to know whether she has any chronic illness as that could a cause of her growth failure? If she has no chronic illness, apart from the growth velocity, she should be evaluated for her height taking both the parents height into consideration (mid parental height). If she falls within the mid parental height, then it should not be worrisome. However, a height monitoring would be required to check for short stature. She could be a constitutional growth delay where she starts with a normal height and then falls off to the average height as per genetic influences. At the moment a follow up of height every 6 monthly with charting on the mid parental height is required.
