Question
My 3 years old son was tested for calcium and creatinine in urine, because he has problems in his growing chart. He results to have a high calcium level in urine, so his pediatrician referred him to a nephrologist. I am waiting for the appointment, but I am worried and want to know what can cause this and what to expect.
Answer
High calcium in urine is called as hypercalciuria. It can lead to kidney stones or even bleeding in the urine. His blood calcium level would also have to be analyzed to check if he has high serum calcium that is causing excess loss in the urine or whether it is primary a kidney problem. If it is a primary kidney disease, he would require certain medications to control the calcium loss in the urine.
