Question
My 18 months old son has a skin tag on his rectum. I thought skin tags only occurred at middle age and older? Will this growth cause or put him at risk for other problems, and what can be done to correct this if anything?
Answer
Anal skin tags though not common in children are also not uncommon. They are flaps of skin at the anal verge. They are usually painless and if painful are associated with other conditions causing the pain. Cleanliness can be a problem. Fecal debris may become trapped under the tag upon wiping in one direction. Itching may also be irritating. They can be removed by laser or surgery if symptomatic.
