Question
I took my 19 month old son to a pediatric dentist and he diagnosed him with breastfeeding caries. He said that he would schedule a cleaning, and prescribe heavy fluoride treatments, and then when my son was between 2 and 3 years old, he would schedule him for some crown work on the 4 front teeth. What is your feeling about fluoride treatments for one so young, and what do you feel about crown work on a 2 year old? Thank you.
Answer
If the child has "nursing decay", he should be treated without delay. The anterior teeth can be treated right away, and crowns done if the decay is extensive. Fluoride gel or preferably varnish application could be done right away, so as to prevent further deterioration of the other teeth. This however is the corrective treatment, the child should also be weaned off the breast, oral hygiene habits reiterated, dietary habits need to be modified, as part of the further preventive treatment. This is absolutely a must to prevent further decay.
