Question
What makes your red blood cell count high, and could you give a reason why?
Answer
High red blood count is also called polycythemia. It could be due to a variety of causes such as heart disease, lung disease, living at a high altitude or even idiopathic (i.e. there is no cause). It develops to increase the oxygen supply to the tissues as the red blood cells are the carriers of oxygen in the body. In conditions such as cyanotic heart disease or chronic lung disease, oxygen supply to the body is less and so a compensation occurs in the form of polycythemia.
