Question
What is wrong in giving Gripe water to babies?
Answer
As per allopathic medicine, babies in the first 4 months need to be exclusively breast fed i.e. they need not be even given water. By giving anything else including gripe water, the demand for breast feeds decrease and so the milk output decreases. Hence, it is recommended that nothing should be given to a baby less than 4 months of age. Gripe water is said not be of any use. However, according to traditional Indian medicine, gripe water contains dill seed oil (SUVA) that helps in the removal of gas from the baby's abdomen and thus helps in colic.
