Question
Can protein in the stool of a 12 year old boy with a history of nephrotic syndrome be a symptom? What other conditions show a positive test for protein in stool?
Answer
Proteins in stools can be due to a variety of causes. The most common cause is malabsorption whereby the proteins eaten in the food are not absorbed by the body and are lost in the stools. Other conditions in which proteins are lost in stools are intestinal lymphactesia whereby lymph is lost in the stools and lymph is a good source of protein. Consult your doctor so that he can examine him and advise further tests if required.
