Question
My daughter just turned three years old. She had bowed legs as a toddler and now has knock knees. Her upper legs tough entirely (from knee up) and appear normal. Her lower legs are about 4 inches apart when her knees are touched. Her great grandmother had knocked knees as an adult. What do you suggest?
Answer
The commonest cause of knock knees in children is due to rickets i.e. Vitamin D deficiency which leads to decrease calcium deposition in the bones and causes the bone to get deformed. Other less common causes are inherent bone defects, renal causes. Consult a pediatrician to examine her and come to a correct diagnosis. You may also need to consult an orthopedic to check if she requires any intervention to correct the knock knees.
