Question
I have a child who will be attending my school that has been diagnosed with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. He is currently on IV Flolan. I am interested in anything you can give me on care for the active school-age child with this situation. Thank you.
Answer
You have to take care of certain things: Look for warning signs of deterioration of the condition in the form of

1. Progressive shortness of breath (especially with activity)
2 Hyperventilation (breathing harder and faster)
3. Fatigue (tiring easily)
4.Progressive weakness
5.Fainting spells
6.Light headedness or dizziness
7.Coughing up blood
8.Progressive cyanosis (blue tinge to lips hands and feet)

It is important to see your child's doctor on a regular basis. He should be restricted from competitive sports and should participate only in light activity. He should rest when he is tired. Since your child is already on IV Flolan, he requires proper monitoring for any deterioration. Exposure to high altitude may worsen the PPH and may need to be restricted. Hope this answers your query
