Question
Hello, Sir / Madam, I had earlier enquired about my daughter's condition, for which you had given a reply on 16.1.02 regarding heterochromia. I would like to know further clarifications in this matter, please. My daughter is now just 10 months old. One of her iris is black and the other is greyish-blue. It was not so evident at the time of her birth, but as she is growing up, the difference is very clear. People keep staring at her when we go out and we have to answer a lot of questions to everyone. I'm worried my daughter will have to go through the same ordeal when she grows older. You had mentioned wearing colored lenses to rectify the problem. We have some more queries in this regard: 1) How soon can she wear colored lens? Will continuous use of lens (for many years) cause any problems? 2) I have been wearing semi-soft lens for the last 3 years- even during my pregnancy period. Could this have, in any way, caused heterochromia in my daughter? 3) Is there any permanent treatment- like operation or some other treatment, so that her right eye colored can be changed to black? 4) No one else in the family( my and my husband's) has greyish blue eyes. Can this trait be passed on to the next generation through my daughter? Please do clarify on these matters, as we have not come across such cases earlier. Waiting for your reply in anticipation.
Answer
There is no permanent treatment for heterochromia. Sometimes the grey Colored iris picks up color as the child grows older. Colored contact lenses are advised in children 8 years or more of age. Though contact lenses have cause no problems usually, continued use of contact lens may lead to formation of follicles on the conjunctiva. Wearing of contact lenses during pregnancy has no relation to heterochromia in the child.
