Question
Can you please tell me what's the best way to tell if your child has strep throat or a sore throat?
Answer
Sore throat could be due to a variety of causes such as viral infection, bacterial infection of which streptococcal could be one of the cause. A sore throat due to viral infection is also accompanied by fever, conjunctival congestion, cold, generalized body ache and malaise. A streptococcal sore throat also causes fever but the throat will be red, inflamed and the child would be very toxic. The best way to differentiate between the two is to do the throat culture to isolate the organism causing the infection. However, it is recommended to treat a sore throat with antibiotics in a school going child to prevent Rheumatic fever from taking place.
