Question
I have a question: My 2 years-old daughter drinks water a lot (2 liters a day) and pee a lot. Is there something wrong with her? FYI, I (her dad) am a diabetic. Thanks
Answer
This is definitely a lot of water intake. This condition is known as polydipsia and increased urine output is known as polyuria. There are several conditions that need to be ruled out such as diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus and renal tubular acidosis. Finally, if everything is ruled out, it would be just increased water intake and nothing else. You need to consult a pediatric nephrologist. He would advise certain blood and urine tests to come to the correct diagnosis. He may also advice a water deprivation test.
