Question
Hi, I've a four year old son whose left leg (below knee)and foot turns in my gp diagnosed knock knees and has referred him to physiotherapist. Can u tell me please, what knock knee is and is there anything that we as parents can be done whilst we wait for a physiotherapist appointment.
Answer
Knock knees in children could be due to a variety of reasons. It is normally seen in some children at 3-4 years of age and corrects by 7 years of age. Other commonest cause is calcium and vitamin D deficiency in children commonly called as rickets. There are other causes such as boony deformity of the bone of the leg, ligament laxity, obesity etc, however, they are rare. Most of the knock-knees correct by themselves. Exercising the limb and giving calcium supplements to the child may be useful. Sometimes a knee brace may be required. Rarely, if the angulation is severe, surgery may be advised. Hope this answers your query.
