Question
My son is on Bicitra for renal tubular acidosis. The dosage prescribed by his doctor is 15 cc 3 times a day (total 45cc a day) My question is: Is it imperative to give it 3 times a day or can I give divide the 45cc into 2 equal doses and give it once in the morning and once at night, which is easier for all concerned. One doctor has told us that the dosage - once, twice or 3 times a day - doesn't matter as long as he gets the total (45cc). But another doctor is very emphatic that it has to be given 3 times a day (15cc x 3 times a day). Could you please explain how Bicitra works and should be administered? Thank you.
Answer
Bicitra is an alkaline solution that decreases the acid build up in the body. It is preferable to give it in divided doses rather than once a day for several reasons: 1. It is not possible for a child to tolerate such a high dose at one time. 2. It may decrease the acidity in the stomach leading to entry of germs and infections. 3. The alkali stabilizes within 4-6 hours and hence a dose should be given in divided doses to maintain the blood pH in the steady range.
