Question
Dear Doctor, My son is 2 year and 2 months. His overall growth and development is fine. He is toilet trained, but there are two problems. The first one is that his stools are very hard and he finds it very difficult to pass sometimesthat there are traces of blood also. Due to this, he avoids sitting on his potty or in the toilet. When it gets beyond control, he passes his stools around the house. The second problem is that he still wets his bed in his sleep. During the day, he will go the toilet to relieve himself. The problem is only during the night. We give him a lot of water, fruits, oats, kellogg'schocos, and his diet is regular home cooked food. Could you please help me? Esp. his stools, because we are a little worried about it.Thank you.
Answer
Straining to pass stools causing blood in stools is a problem that needs to be dealt with seriously because if left untreated it could lead to a vicious cycle of holding back the stools and harder the stools then and more pain while passing that again leads to holding back of stools. Primarilyif he has blood in stools he needs to be examined if there is a fissure or pile. Also, a stool examination would be worthwhile. He would require a mild laxative such as milk of magnesia for a couple of days to soften the stools so that it does not hurt when he wishes to pass. Also, read the article on "TOILET TRAINING" on www.pediatriconcall.com or from the link given below as improper toilet training can cause such problems.

Regarding the urine, since he is already dry during day, he would soon become dry by night. It is worrisome only if a boy continues to wet at night even after 6 years of age. Until then they achieve the control.
