Question
My 11-year old son has an enlarged nipple area on his left side. His left breast is also slightly larger than his right side. Is this normal in boys? I know my right breast is larger than my left breast, but I have never had any problems. Thank you.
Answer
What your child is known as gynaecomastia (enlarged breast seen in boys). It is normally seen in boys at the time of puberty and is due to the hormonal changes. It usually resolves on its own. Only if it is very large or becomes hard, then treatment is required. Usually only one breast may be involved or there may be unequal involvement of both the breasts.
