Question
Under the Hearing Aid Section you need to modify the reply to digital aids for profound hearing impairment. YES, Digital hearing aids are available for profound hearing loss but it requires experienced audiologist to dispense them as many children with profound impairment have recruitment i.e. poor tolerance for loudness and amplification range becomes limited. Many children have benefited with these aids."
Answer
Though most of the audiologists say that digital hearing aids can be used for profound hearing losses, it helps only in the perception of sound and not in discrimination and recognition of sound. Also there may be a problem of amplification above 3000 Hz as a result of which its use gets limited. Infact, recent studies have determined the use of cochlear implants for profound hearing losses and we should be soon seeing how beneficial they are to profound hearing losses.
