Question
What might cause a young children tooth to turn grayish? I'm worried a problem may have arisen from a fall the child had at our home, when he split his lip, at 15 mos. He's now 18 mos. and the grayness has appeared?
Answer
The grayness associated with the tooth, could well be associated with the fall at 15mnths. The tooth might have also sustained an injury, which might have not been visible at the time, as also asymptomatic. The change in color is a usual reaction of the tooth to an injury, as is due to the "bruising" of the tooth. It usually resolves. Must however, watch for an infection in the tooth. If the tooth becomes loose, tender(painful), or a tiny abscess is visible on the gum above the tooth, the child should be taken to a pediatric dentist, who will then take a radiograph and ascertain the treatment modality. These teeth usually turn increasingly Grey, and then lighten. Did the tooth move from original position, inwards as a result of the injury? I would then recommend visiting the dentist too.
