Question
Hello, I am working in Baroda. My 2 year old daughter is having infantile (I can't spell it) eczema problem. She gets allergy on wrists, elbows, feet and on cheeks. This appears as some kind of rashes and mainly visible during winter season. While sleeping, she scratches over and cries. Moreover she is having dry skin. When she was a one month baby, we observed that her face became red after her daily bath. We showed to many child specialists, both alopathy and Homeopathy. Everyone tells this is due to some soaps, oils, etc. We used different medicines also. But there is no much change. I observed whenever we go to Hyderabad, her skin looks very bright as compared to staying in Baroda. Other than this problem, she is very active and healthy. Can you please explain why it is so? And how long she has to suffer with this problem?
Answer
Your child seems to have atopic dermatitis, an allergic skin disorder characterized by rash over the elbows, knees, back of neck, buttocks, cheeks etc and excessive itching. This allergy could be due to a variety of causes and it is very difficult to pinpoint the factor. The treatment consists of avoiding the precipitating factor which includes avoiding preservatives and coloring in foods (try as far as possible to give natural food), creams and lotions, soaps (glycerine soap is the best option) and even powders containing some artificial material. If the eczema persists, anti-histamininic syrups need to be given and maybe even steroid creams may be required in severe cases. This needs to be done under the guidance of a doctor. This eczema may be a chronic problem and may wax and wane over a period of time. There is also a chance of other allergic problems such as asthma and allergic cold later in life. Hence proper management is most important.
