My daughter was diagnosed with Lucey Driscol Syndrome 24 hours after being released from the hospital. Her billirubin was 33 upon return to the hospital. The normal treatment was taken with blood transfer and photo lights for the 7 days following. My daughter is now 14 and healthy in all ways, with exception to a learning difficulty. She currently reads at a 4th grade level. She is very bright, doing pre-algebra in math, but just can not read. I am frustrated. Could this be connected to the Lucey Driscol Syndrome? If it could be can you help point me to where I can get some help. Sylvan learning centers are stumped and public school psychologist hasn't helped. Are there long term studies on these children? Are there other folks that I can talk with? What is your medical suggestion?
Answer
Unconjugated jaundice in the newborn period if untreated and the bilirubin if it rises to high may cause brain damage called as kernicterus. This may lead to hearing problems, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities. Thus, the treatment should be exchange transfusion with blood and phototherapy to decrease the bilirubin level. Thus, if your daughter had very high bilirubin at birth due to Lucey Driscoll syndrome, learning disability may occur. Back to All Questions
